NICU Friendly Costumes

Baby's first holidays are an important milestone for all new parents. Help families celebrate their baby's first holidays with NICU friendly costumes!
What we need?
All handmade items should be made in a clean, smoke‐free, pet‐free environment.

Hats & Headbands
  • In preemie, newborn, & 0-3 month sizing.
  • Hats and headbands can be knit, crochet, or cut out of felt or other soft fabrics.
  • Ideas: Animals, super-heroes, sports, or generic holiday themes work well. Solid primary colors (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, white, or black) also work great as to pair with costumes & outfits.

Felt Halloween Costumes
  • Simple flat costumes can be cut out of soft felt and embellished with vinyl or felt stickers. These simple costumes are used to lay gently over the top of baby so that they will not interfere with tubes or wires.
  • Costumes should be approx. 5-8" wide and 6"-10" long
  • Ideas: Animals, super-heroes, sports, characters, or generic holiday themes

Crochet Costumes
  • Simple flat-style costumes can be crochet with soft baby or sport weight yarns. These flat costumes are used to lay gently over the top of baby so that they will not interfere with tubes or wires.
  • Ideas: Animals, super-heroes, sports, characters, or generic holiday themes

Holiday Themed Bibs
  • Holiday themed bibs work great as a simple holiday costume. Plain, solid-colored bibs can also be used as a base to decorate for NICU-friendly costumes.

Plush Bear Outfits
  • For those small preemies who are ready to wear clothing, plush bear outfits can make great costumes.

Preemie & Newborn Holiday Outfits
  • For NICU babies who are able to be dressed, preemie and newborn holiday outfits and store bought costumes are greatly appreciated.

Proper use of our NICU Friendly Costumes:
Costumes are props only and should never be left unattended and used only when baby is calm. Flat style costumes are best when used over top of a swaddled baby or over a small white blanket or onesie.
