Bonding Scent Hearts
Looking for a way to volunteer your sewing skills?
Help us promote parent & infant bonding in the NICU by sewing bonding scent hearts!

These 100% cotton flannel scent hearts are given to NICU parents to wear next to their skin, absorbing their scents. The hearts are taken to the NICU and placed next to the infant where they can be soothed by their parent's scent and aid in bonding, even when parent cannot be at the bedside. They are provided in sets of two to allow the hearts to be switched out as needed.
Scent hearts should be made from 100% cotton flannel and measure approximately 5 inches by 5 inches.
1 yard cut of fabric will yield approximately 16 hearts.
All handmade items should be made in a clean, smoke‐free, pet‐free environment.
Fabric should be washed in a basic gentle, scent free detergent.
Finished scent hearts can be mailed or dropped off to:

Scent hearts are distributed nationwide through our care package program and hospital requests.

FAQs: Scent Hearts
Q. Why 100% cotton Flannel?
Cotton flannel is hypoallergenic, durable, and tends to be softer for babies delicate skin. It is also ideal for scent absorbation & retention.
Q. Can the edges be serged or embroidered?
Yes, as long as the outermost edge is clean with no loose threads.
Q. Can I put embellishments like embroidery, transfers, patches, buttons, charms, bows, or other accessories?
No, please do not use any embellishments or accessories of any kind out of safety for the infant & hospital regulations.
Q. Do I need to topstitch along the edges?
While topstitching is not necessary, it does add a finishing touch and helps with durability.
Q. Do the back and front need to be the same pattern?
No. We find that using a solid color on the back of a pattern can be more cost efficient since the patterned fabrics tend to be more costly.
Q. Do the hearts need to match in pairs?
No, it does look nice to have a matching set but not necessary. This is where using a solid on one side & pattern on the other would work nicely! We just ask that the colors & patterns coordinate well together.
Q. Is there batting between the two pieces of fabric?
No, the scent hearts are just 2 pieces of cotton flannel sewn together.
Q. Do scent hearts need to be packaged separately?
No. We do suggest packing them in a gallon plastic bag or similar to protect them during transit though.
Q. Can the heart I donate be sent to my local NICU or a specific hospital of my choosing?
No, with the amount of scent hearts that are generously donated to us, there is no way for us to guarantee that your hearts will go to a specific hospital. While this is not a complete list of hospitals that we donate to nationwide, you can find a list of our donation partner hospitals under the About Us section at ProjectSweetPeas.com
Q. Do the hearts need to be 5”x5”?
While they do not need to be exactly 5”, we do prefer this size as we have found that that is the ideal sizing from our littlest micro-preemies to our full term babies.
Q. Do scent hearts need to be made in a smoke free environment?
Scent hearts MUST be kept away from any smoke (including vapes and smoking outside the home or in a car)
Q. Do scent hearts need to be made in a pet free environment?
No, but we do ask that the fabric and finished hearts are away from pets as much as possible.
Q. I can’t sew, is there any way I can help with scent hearts?
Yes! We have volunteers that are more than happy to sew hearts for us. If you would like to just cut out scent hearts, we can pass them on to a volunteer that can sew.
Q. Does the fabric need to be pre washed? If so, what kind of detergent should I use?
Yes, general sewing practices recommend that you wash all fabric before cutting. Any UNSCENTED dye-free detergent is fine, does not need to be baby specific. NO dryer sheets please!
