The Sweet Peas Bookshelf

Stories That Support, Comfort & Connect

Whether you're sitting beside a NICU bedside, explaining a sibling’s journey, navigating life after loss, or simply searching for words that make you feel less alone — books can bring comfort in ways we sometimes can’t explain.

At Project Sweet Peas, we believe stories matter. They help families process difficult emotions, create meaningful moments of connection, and remind us that hope, love, and remembrance can live side by side.

We created The Sweet Peas Bookshelf to share some of our favorite books for NICU families, bereaved families, siblings, and supporters. These are stories that have comforted members of our community through some of life’s hardest and most meaningful moments.

Reading in the NICU

The NICU journey can feel overwhelming, emotional, and uncertain. In the middle of medical terms, monitors, and long days, reading can create moments of calm, bonding, and normalcy.

Reading to your baby in the NICU:

  • Helps strengthen parent-child bonding

  • Allows your baby to hear the comfort of your voice

  • Creates meaningful routines during hospitalization

  • Encourages developmental benefits through language exposure

  • Gives families quiet moments of connection and hope

Many families also find comfort in books that help explain the NICU experience to siblings, grandparents, friends, and even themselves. Stories can help make big emotions feel a little less heavy and remind families they are not alone in this journey.
